terrapin works! my plans for the future.

My Current Plans

As a rising junior, now more than ever I've had to start thinking about what my intentions are and how my college journey will proceed. This is the time when internships start looking to recruit those students that standout and have shown  initiative in both their studies and career prospects. After meeting with my academic advisors and asking for insight from upperclassmen, I have some idea about what I want to do moving forward.

Current College Goals – After 4 semesters at Maryland, I've learned a lot about making my class schedule. STEM courses are ridiculously difficult, so unless you're a workaholic, a genius, or VERY familiar with course material, it's best to space out your classes as much as possible. As such, starting next school year, I'll be taking all future math and physics courses at PG Community College, and only during the Summer or Winter semesters. This way, I'm not over worked during the Spring and Fall, and I'll have more time to dedicate to my difficult classes. I'm interesting in picking up a minor in a non-engineering program in order to diversify my skill set by the end of my junior year. As of right now, I am most interested in Public Leadership, Landscape Management, and Computer Science. I plan on graduating in May 2023, and hope to have a GPA of at least 3.125 (which is actually competitive in the engineering field).

Post-Graduation Plans – After getting my Bachelors degree, I hope to attend graduate school. However, whether or not I do so immediately after graduation or after a few years of work has yet to be decided. There are several companies that have employee programs in which new hires work for the company for a designated period of time, after which the company will pay for your masters program. If I'm able to work for a company that helps finance my education, I would happily put graduate school on hold for a few years to save money. If not, or if I receive a scholarship, I'll go to grad school immediately after graduation. It's a known fact that you can earn a higher salary if you have a higher level of education, and I'm eager to make enough to support my family.

Current Career Interests – While working with Terrapin Works I've come to the understanding that I enjoy working with machines, as well as with people. My top three career choices are consultant, lab technician, and systems engineer. I want to be in a position that allows me to use my analytical and organizational skills, along side my communication skills. I also want a position that would guarantee a lot a benefits, a high salary, and/or chances for advancement.
